THINKING OF OWNING YOUR FIRST MECHANICAL WATCH?
READ THIS BEFORE YOU DECIDE.

There are several milestones in our life: our first bicycle, our first date, our first career. Each of them daunting, at that particular point in our lives.

The owning of a mechanical watch also marks a rite of passage for everyone of us; the first time we put on a serious timepiece which is more than a series of graphical icons on a touch-screen, but rather, a piece of mechanical art which is a cumulation of centuries of human ingenuity, all on our wrist.

But in a sea of watches, how can you ensure what you are buying is a well-built, mechanical timepiece which will last you for years, or even decades, to come?

A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO BUYING
YOUR FIRST MECHANICAL WATCH

  • Provenance - Where does the watch come from?
  • Design - It is a nice watch, but is it for you?
  • Movement - Learning what beats at the heart of the watch.
  • Build - Identifying a well-made timepiece.
  • Warranty & Servicing - Who is going to take care of it?
  • Price - All mechanical watches are expensive.. Really?

BUT FIRST, A COMMON QUESTION:
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN QUARTZ AND MECHANICAL?

PROVENANCE

Where does the watch originate from?

The first question everyone will ask you is: where did you get that watch from? This is something you should consider in two parts: 1) Who makes the watch? and 2) Who retails it? Ensuring you purchase a timepiece from a reputable brand, as well as a reliable retailer, ensures you get both a quality product, and the after-sales service you might require in the future.

The greatest myth is that only Swiss watches are superior, bar none. While we carry a range of quality Swiss-made pieces, we wish to qualify that watch-makers of all nationalities, given the necessary expertise, attention to detail, and equipment, can also create high quality watches.

How do you find out if the watch-maker in question creates a good watch? At Watch Wonderland, we figure this out through a series of processes

- Performance Testing: Procuring the watches in question, and subjecting them through a series of tests. These include timing trials, material checks, and real-life testing over a set period of time (in our case, around 2 weeks of daily wear).

- Movement Reliability: Ensuring that the watch employs the use of a reliable movement, with a history of serviceability. This will include movements made by renowned manufacturers, such as ETA, Sellita, Miyota and Seiko, who have been creating watch movements for decades. These should also be movements which are easily serviceable, and built to run for years to come.

- Relationship Building: you will be surprised to hear how important this is. Speaking and constantly maintaining communication with the brand-owners, we are able to effectively work with them to ensure their watches are built to a certain level of standards, which we know you want.

Why buy from a Retailer?

Physical watch boutiques like Watch Wonderland provide a first-hand experience of the watches, in-person education, as well as form a secondary point of servicing. When buying from us, you will receive our full sales and after-sales support, from our team of experienced Retail Executives.
